Turbocharger troubleshooting

 

Remove the inlet pipe of compressor and check whether the wheel is damaged; Move the wheel with finger and check whether it can rotate flexibly; and feel whether the shaft clearance is normal by hands. (Reference normal range: Radial clearance1mm, axial clearance≤ 0.2mm)

 

Mostly, if wheels are not damaged by foreign matter, there is low possibility of turbocharger failure, if it is intact in appearance, and shaft wheel assembly can rotate flexibly,  wheels do not rub the shell, and its clearance is normal (it can be considered to normal if the wheels was press gently it can rotate without rubbing housing).

Foreign   matter into turbocharger while working

 

Remove   the inlet pipe and check whether the wheel or shaft is damaged by foreign   matter.

 

If wheel   is damaged check the tightness of pipe or whether foreign matter existing in   pipe, which was brought into turbocharger.

Users

Replace   the turbocharger, remove the failure in inlet & outlet pipe and ensure   tightness of pipeline.

Note:   During the maintenance and repair of engine, the air inlet of the compressor   should be well protected. Before installing the air inlet pipe, check   thoroughly if any foreign matter in pipeline.

 

Abnormal wear of bearing and rotor shaft

When the supercharger   works with loud noise and friction noise, or it is suspected that the   turbocharger bearing or rotor shaft is worn.

 

Remove the inlet pipe   of compressor and exhaust pipe of turbine outlet, check whether wheel is   damaged and whether rubbing happens between wheel and housing. If any scratch   happens, the turbocharger is damaged.

 

Move the   wheel with fingers to check whether it rotates flexibly; feel clearance of   turbocharger shaft by hands. (Reference normal range: radial   clearance<1mm; axial clearance ≤ 0.2mm)

Caused by   hard particles in oil circuit or use of inferior lubricating oil

Check   whether the lubricating oil and lubricating pipelines are clean or contain   hard particles; check whether the inferior lubricating oil is used.   (Note: check whether there is any sludge, impurities, blackening and glue in   the central housing, oil inlet and outlet, pipe or in oil).  

Users.

Clean the   lubricating pipeline, replace the filter, replace high-quality lubricating   oil, and replace the turbocharger.

Lack of   oil

 

Check   whether the oil pipeline is bent, blocked or leak.

 

Check   whether the oil is sufficient.

 

Insufficient   oil pressure or burning may cause oil pipeline relief pressure which cause   turbocharger cannot supply oil normally.

(1)   Replace   the turbocharger and eliminate problems of bending, blockage and leakage

(2)   Replace   the turbocharger and replenish oil.

Dynamic balance   failure due to dust deposition on wheel

Visually inspect the   surface of wheel, the inner wall of the inlet of the compressor housing and   the inner wall of the inlet pipe of the compressor, and check whether there   is dust deposition adhering. If any, it means that the inlet air is too   dirty, the dynamic balance of the wheel fails due to dust deposition, causing   bearing failure.

Improper   use

Ask user   if any of the following improper behavior happens

1Adopt the operation mode of   "accelerating → coasting in neutral"

 2Excessive   idle time(more than 20 min)

3After starting the engine,  run at high speed by stepping on the   accelerator without running at low speed for 3~5 minutes first; Or after a   long time of running, shutdown without idling for 3~5 minutes.

 

Ask the   driver whether he operates properly:

After   starting the engine, pound the accelerator immediately without idle running   for 3~5 minutes. Shutdown immediately without idle running for 3~5 minutes.   Repeat hot showdown; the above referred may cause turbocharger lack of oil   and parts rubbing housing or oil leakage.

4Check whether there is coking or   caking of oil in central housing

Users  

Clean the   air inlet pipeline, eliminate the problems of air filter failure, poor   sealing or pipeline sealing, and train customers to use turbocharger   properly.

 







 

 

 Faulty: Turbocharger

              Oil leakage

1、            The engine exhaust pipe smokes heavily, which is usually black or blue;

2、            There is oil leakage at the connecting part of turbocharger and inlet& outlet pipelines.

3、            Engine power decreases and fuel consumption increases.

The   turbocharger is damaged, if the wheel and shaft are damaged, housing is   rubbed or the clearance of the shaft is too large, and it cannot rotate   flexibly.  Replace the turbocharger and   carry out the subsequent inspections.

If the   turbocharger has no fault through manual inspection. Do not replace the   turbocharger, and carry out the subsequent inspection steps at this time.

The air inlet   negative pressure is high

When there is oil or   serious oil trace in the compressor, that is, the turbocharger is leaking   oil, carefully check the turbocharger.

1Dust   enters air   filter or air filter fails (check the dust on the inner wall of intake   manifold and inlet of the cylinder cap)

 

Reference: After   removal of the oil trace, remove the inlet pipe of compressor, i.e.   turbocharger takes air from the atmosphere directly, run at intermediate   speed for 5-10 min, and at high speed for more than 20 min, check whether the   turbocharger still leaks oil or the situation is improved

2After the above   treatment, if there is no oil leakage or the situation is significantly   improved, it means that the air inlet negative pressure is high, and the air   inlet system should be checked later. "

3New machine with   short mileage: the rubber hose is coated with oil or grease during assembly,   resulting in false oil leakage trace

Check   whether the oil return pipe of turbocharger is blocked? (For example, the   self-made gasket oil hole is not aligned, the oil pipe is blocked (by oil   sludge), or the oil pipe is too bent or too flat etc.)

Too high   crank case pressure

Checking method

1Check   whether the breather or its pipe are blocked and whether pipe is bent or   interfered.

2If the   pipe of breather is unobstructed, remove the oil filler cap or the breather   (depending on the model) and run at high speed. Observe whether smoke color   has changed significantly. After 20 minutes, check whether the oil leakage   has improved. If it has improved, check the crankcase pressure.

Depends   on the actual situation

Check   whether the breather blocked or whether the piston ring, cylinder liner worn   causing gas blowby.

Caused by the hard   partials in pipelines or use of inferior lubricating oil

Check whether the   lubricating oil and pipeline is clean. Ensure whether inferior oil used   (Note: check whether there is any sludge, impurities, in the central housing   or in oil)

Clean the   lubricating pipeline, use high-quality lubricating oil or replace   turbocharger

 

Lack of   oil

Oil inlet   pipe leak:

1Check   whether the oil inlet pipe blocked. The pressure relief of the oil circuit   due to insufficient oil pressure or burning causes failure in oil supply to   the turbocharger.

2Whether oil is sufficient.

3After starting the   engine, step on the accelerator to run at high speed immediately without idle   running for 3~5 minutes. Shutdown immediately after a long period of high-speed   running without idle running for 3~5 min. Hot showdown. Adopt the operation   mode of "accelerating and coasting in neutral" The above referred   may cause turbocharger lack of oil and the parts rubbing the housing or oil   leakage.

3Instruct   the driver to operate properly, replace the damaged turbocharger.

Incorrect application

The following   improper operation exist

1Adopt the operation mode of   "accelerating — coasting in neutral"

2Excessive idle time (more than 20 min)

3After starting the engine, step on the   accelerator to run at high speed immediately without running at low speed for   3~5 minutes. Or shut-down after a long period of high-speed running without   idle running for 3~5 min.

4Check whether coking or caking happens   in the oil of central  housing.

User

Clear the lubricating   oil pipeline and replace the turbocharger. Train the customer to use   turbocharger properly.
